Memory Cards

DigitalUnlike 35mm photography the quality of picture will not vary dependent on the price and quality of memory card you buy. The nature of digital photography means that your pictures are stored as 1 & 0. These 0's and 1's make up the picture and because it is not possible to have a "bad quality" 0 or 1 then the picture is not affected in anyway by different "quality" memory cards.

However, you will find that the price of memory cards does vary and this is because of these factors which are important:

  1. Capacity - the larger the card capacity the more images you can store on it. See how many pictures you can store on a memory card
  2. Speed - faster cards will enable you to take more pictures in a shorter space of time. More expensive cameras may have a buffer to help also. A faster card will also enable you to upload to your PC faster too.
  3. Reliability - memory cards are not 100% reliable all of the time (although it is very unlikely that you will have a problem). What this can mean is that a memory card can become "corrupt", just like anything stored digitally on a hard drive or other type of storage. Brand names such as Sandisk, Fuji, Sony and Kingston are pretty good
  4. Formats - There are also different formats of memory cards which affects price
