A digital guide to JPEG images

Guide to JPEGJpeg is probably the most common format for digital images.  Most digital cameras from compacts to top end digital SLR cameras will include the ability to capture images in Jpeg format.

On most digital cameras you will have two options when taking photographs in Jpeg format.  Each manufacturer uses their own terms but in general they are size and quality.

Size – this, as the name suggests, relates to the size of the image.  The larger the image size the more space on your memory card is needed.
Quality – this relates to the amount of compression that is used when storing the image.  Again the higher the compression the smaller the image size.  However, the more compression used means the poorer the quality of the image.  Often cameras will describe this as Super Fine, Fine and Normal.

I always shoot images in the highest quality jpeg that I can.  It’s easy to reduce the size or quality later if needed but its impossible to put back pixels that are not there.

Digital SLR and more expensive compact cameras also allow you to shoot on RAW or TIFF format.  Raw format means that nothing is processed by the camera allowing you to do more in post image manipulation software e.g. photoshop afterwards.  Tiff is uncompressed and will create massive file sizes
